Jose Rodriguez's Story

I Will Never Do This

If you told me five years ago that I would be a foster dad, I would have laughed. I was someone who firmly believed I would never become a foster parent—or at the very least, not until we had biological children.

My wife and I were always open to adoption. We knew it was something we wanted to do. But we always assumed it would happen through a traditional, private route. We never once imagined our path to building a family would lead us straight through the foster care system.

I had my life planned out. It was structured, comfortable, and predictable. Stepping into the world of state child welfare was nowhere on my radar. Yet, here we are. No biological children and over the last four years, four different children have walked through our front door. Four unique lives, each carrying their own burdens.

Each one a sudden phone call in the middle of the day that disrupted my comfort and completely rewrote my schedule. Foster care changes your reality. It forces you to watch heartbreak unfold on your living room rug.

You quickly learn that you aren’t just providing a spare bed; you are trying to anchor a child whose entire world just shattered. You handle the frequent hospital visits, you navigate the chaotic court updates, and you try to piece together fragments of dignity for a little person who is completely vulnerable.

And then, one of those four children never left. The adoption we always planned for looked completely different than we expected. We found ourselves standing in a courtroom, signing paperwork, and promising to be a permanent family for a child who came to us in the most unexpected way.

It is funny how the things you never expect turn out to be the exact moments you cherish the most. I didn't start this journey to be a hero, and I certainly didn't do it because it was easy but once I did it, I couldn't just go back to my comfortable, quiet life. Four years. Four children. One permanent son. Our plans were completely wrecked, and I have never been more grateful.
